Freur was the name of the first band of Karl Hyde and Rick Smith, presently of the dance act Underworld. Formed 1982 in Cardiff, Wales by Karl Hyde, Rick Smith who previously released the single 'I Don't Like Cars' in 1981 as The Screen Gemz and Alfie Thomas. The band originally had only a graphic 'squiggle' for a name. Doot-Doot is the debut studio album by Freur and was released in 1983. The cassette version of the album included four extra tracks. The lead single, Doot-Doot, charted at 59 on the UK Singles Chart and 17 in New Zealand. The album was unavailable on CD until the 1993 reissue by Oglio Records in the United States. The album has since been reissued twice in the United Kingdom, in 2000 by Columbia Records and subsequently in 2009 by Cherry Red Records as Get Us out of HereDoot-Doot which includes. Freur's debut album was an ambitious but uneven experiment in early techno, a set of synthesized beats and keyboard riffs. Occasionally, as on the title track, there was enough quirky humor and hooks to make it an enjoyable exercise in dance-floor grooves, but the record just as often meandered around in an attempt to find the appropriate sonic textures. Since Freur eventually evolved into Underworld, Doot-Doot is an interesting piece of history, but judged as music, it pretty much stands as a fitfully entertaining artifact of its time.
