The Diary of One Who Disappeared Czech: Zápisník zmizelého is a song cycle for tenor, alto, three female voices and piano, written by Czech composer Leoš Janáček. On May 14, 1916, the Lidové noviny newspaper published verses titled From a Pen of the Self-taught Writer. This diary in poems tells the story of a village boy who falls in love with the young gipsy girl Zefka Žofka, and decides to leave his family and village with her. The verses made a deep impression on Leoš Janáček. Ian Bostridge An die Musik. Listen free to Leoš Janáček Janáček: The Diary of One Who Disappeared. Leoš Janáček 3 July 1854 in Hukvaldy 12 August 1928 in Ostrava was a Czech composer. He was inspired by the broader field of Slavic folk music, weaving it into some of his greatest compositons: his Sinfonietta, Glagolitic Mass, Taras Bulba, string quartets and operas. Janáček is generally recognised as an inimitable composer, and one of his country's foremost talents. Janáček, the son of a schoolmaster, sang as a boy in the choir of the monastery in Brno. In the throes of despair, he penned more than 700 love letters and a haunting 22-part song cycle called Diary of One Who Disappeared, about a village boy who falls in love with a Romany girl. Director Ivo van Hove, in collaboration with Flemish opera company Muziektheater Transparant, brings his trademark physicality and stripped-down aesthetic to bear on Janáčeks masterpiece.
